Help us to help the animals

Recently several dogs have come into our care with injuries that have needed costly vet treatment. Can you help one of these dogs by sending a donation?

Molly with a broken leg

Molly was struck by a car as she was wandering along a road in the dark. The break was in too difficult a place to have a cast so was bandaged and has to be held in a sling for at least six weeks. Initially she was on morphine and antibiotics and the vet was concerned she may have some internal damage as she was reluctant to eat. Two weeks later blood tests revealed she had no internal injuries but was barely eating and drinking enough to stay alive which was thought to be due to stress and shock. It's five weeks now since the accident and x-rays are showing her leg is proving very slow to heal although she is eating a little more. Through all this distress and pain, she hasn't shown a hint of aggression to anyone and we still hope we can turn life around for this lovely, gentle dog.

Asia with a torn leg

Asia is a greyhound who tore a large area of skin from  around her hind leg and had to be rushed to the vet for an emergency operation. It took over 30 stitches to replace the torn skin and we were very concerned with so much skin damage that the stitches wouldn't hold. She had to stay in the vets to begin with and then remain on complete rest for several days to enable the skin to knit together. Thankfully her leg is healing well and she is  now looking a family who will give her a loving home.

Terrier left in pain with open wounds

We were notified of a situation where a small terrier who was kept chained up outside had been set upon by 3 small dogs and was unable to defend himself or run away. Even when approached by a concerned neighbour the owner refused to take the terrified wounded dog to the vet stating "He'll be ok, he's a tough little fella". This a photo of some of his gaping wounds 4 weeks later when the dog was handed in to us. Thankfully with veterinary treatment and care his physical wounds have healed and he is now in a new home where he is being loved and cared for.

Sasha is dumped in extreme pain

Sasha, a young female Lab x was found dumped in extreme pain and discomfort with streaming eyes. The vet diagnosed her with Entropian of the eyes, which means her lower lids had grown inwards so that the eye lashes were continually scratching her eyes. She needed a very delicate  operation which involved cutting a slip of skin out and then stitching it back together again so that the lower lid will lie flat once healed. This was a very lengthy operation and needless to say very costly. Sasha has found a new home and is pictured here with the stitches out and her eyes beginning to heal. We would like to thank everyone who has given a donation to help with Sasha's vet bills.

A very sad warning to all dog lovers.

On Sunday the 8th of March we took our dogs for their walks as usual, they enjoyed themselves so much and by 11 o' clock that night they were both dead.

They had been poisoned and died in a dreadful manner and the vet could not save them.  We have had dogs in this area for 23 years and know our neighbours do not lay poison and they have all visited us to enforce this.  They are outraged that whether by accident or design this has happened.  Our dogs are always with us so we cannot understand how this happened.  They never gave anyone a moment to worry.  All our neighbours have told us this which has helped.  We have heard of another poisoning four miles away, two dogs and they belonged to a sheep farmer and they were poisoned on the farmer's property.  We may be looking at something more sinister. so I am warning you all out there please be very careful. If it happened to us it will happen to anyone.

We are devastated that two lovely dogs who never harmed anyone or anything should die in this way. We live 11 miles west of Bantry.

Dogs Trust Neutering Scheme

The Dogs Trust is an international charity that has set up a neutering scheme in Ireland entitling people who are presently receiving social welfare payments or pensions to have their dog neutered for a maximum cost of 20 euro by any participating vet. This really is the only way that the huge pet over-population crisis will be tackled.
